I am about to install a lazy jack kit and want to use pop rivets to attach the stainless hardware to the aluminum mast and boom. I can use aluminum or stanless rivets, either way I will have dissimilar metals touching. Is there a better way to do this or perhaps a coating or gasket that is typically used for this sort of thing?
Thanks!

This is a low load application - I'd use aluminum rivets. Other than LocTite (blue) I have never heard of a coating as you describe.

If you do use stanless rivets (very tenacious!) you will need a rivet gun rated for steel.

In the Navy (RN) we used to prevent dissimilar metal corrosion by using a seal between the surfaces (this was on helicopter panels) and it was very effective. So using a surface separator such as butyl it would seem to be worth the effort. Of course, some metal to metal connection is most likely, minimizing it would seem prudent.

It is true that you will have dis-similar materials and a source of corosion/oxidation. However, I believe there are SS fittings on the mast (anodized aluminum) that utilize SS machine screws, for example, the screws that hold internal halyard blocks. Having said that, I also had concerns regarding the aluminum support brackets (non-anodized aluminum) that I made to support my solar panel. I used SS screws to hold the aluminum support together and was concerned with with using the aluminum supports(not anodized) and in addition, the use of the SS screws. I bought Industrial Grade Rustoleum Enamel primer and paint spray and applied to the aluminum supports. My website has some of the details. But here is one photo of the painted aluminum supports.

When installing dissimilar metals use any paint or clear urethane in the installation and you will solve the problem. Install fasteners with wet paint or urethane.

Thanks for all of the tips guys. I also noticed a mix of fasteners and hardware already installed on the boom and mast but was not sure if they were somehow coated prior to installation.

On our aircraft zinc chromate is typical for dissimilar metals contact. I see that jamestown distributors carries it as well.

Thanks again, cant wait to get this mod installed if should be very handy!
