Over the last couple years I have read a number of Catalina 25 boat owners mention that they have experienced a broken keel cable.
For those who have experienced that kind of failure or a cable that is showing wear, can we hear where the break or wear has occurred. I am just curious to know if there is a pattern to the failure.
Here's a quick re-hash from the last discussion and what I'd dredged up from the archives.
The break most often occurs right at the fitting (swaged) at the end of the cable. Internal cable corrosion is suspected as the prime culprit. Other posts wondered about the effects of over stressing the keel cable by trying to raise it too far with the winch.
There were some folks wondering aloud going to another style fitting to avoid the problem... don't recall if anyone had actually done it yet. Another suggestion was trying to seal the fitting with 3M 101 or similar stuff.
At this point, I think I'll just plan on changing mine every couple years.

The current thinking is that swing keel cables should be fabricated with the cable end thoroughly impregnated with polysulfide sealant before being shoved into the swage fitting and crimped. For boats kept in fresh water, the cable should be replaced every 5 years, for salt water boats, every two or three years. Actually, IMHO, swing keel 22's and 25's should probably not be put in salt water marinas in the first place, due to rapid corrosion of the keel and the pivot bracket hardware. The next time someone calls Catalina Direct, that would be a good question to ask: are the new replacement cables they sell being sealed at the swage end?

One of my cable failures involved the keel bolt cable attachment pulling out. The keel rusted reducing the number of threads left holding the cable in place. Never broke a cable though.

Larry, "Even Chance" has been in salt water for many years, and there has not been "rapid corrosion" of the keel and hanger hardware. The pivot hardware has been replaced once in 17 years, three years ago. I'll do that again this year for peace of mind.
I keep the keel painted, and corrosion has not been a problem. Maybe others have had a very different experience, but for what it's worth, that's been mine. By the way, the boat handbook does recommend against keeping the swing in salt water.
