We recently moved to the Triad area of NC. (Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point)Would be grateful for any info on where to sail nearby, marinas, etc. Would equally appreciate info on companies to move the boat from Georgia to here, dos and don'ts for owners moving a boat, etc. again. Thanks, folks.

Can't help with any local info but it must be nice to live in that area. It's one of my favorite areas in this country.

Fred, Are you planning to keep the boat on the coast or a inland lake?

Hi, Tom,
I'd like to have the boat pretty close so that a day trip is fairly easy to make, so I think an inland lake. Belew's Lake is only 30-40 minutes from here, but I just heard it is crowded and even dangerous with power traffic. I've also heard Oriental and Beaufort, NC on the coast are wonderful, but that would require a whole weekend to go sailing.

How about Lake Norman, between Statesville and Charlotte? Of the lakes I've seen in NC, that looked like the best for sailing. But they're all loaded with drag-boats and 75 mph PWCs on weekends...

Check out Falls Lake (12,000 acres) and Jordan Lake (14,000 acres) near Raleigh.

Fred,
I surely understand wanting to keep your boat close by. It's great to be able to slip off for quick sails. Keeping her close and on a lake has its benefits. Some of the draw backs of coastal sailing is you would have to deal with the up keep of your boat bottom,
also having to make arrangements for the occasional tropical storms and hurricanes that roll through. But....
The Pamlico Sound area of coastal NC has some great sailing. You have Roanoke Island (home of the Lost Colony), Ocracoke, Cape Lookout, Beaufort, Oriental(Sailing Capital of NC), New Bern, Belhaven, Little Washington, Elizabeth City and my home waters - Bath NC (the oldest town in NC and once home of Blackbeard). All these places are sailor friendly and many have free town docks for over night stays. And of course you have the ICW if you get the urge to go farther. The sound is bigger than you may think. It takes me about 8 hours to cross over to Ocracoke (which is my favorite destination). Many times I make that trip and never see another boat, just an occasional ferry.

Plenty to think about. Google any of those places with the word sailing and read up before you make up your mind.
If you do decide on the coast let me know.

Tom

Tom, did you used to keep a C-250 at Aqualand on Lake Lanier, from where you gave me advice on a canvas shop to duplicate your custom bimini?
On topic, I am hoping to check out Jordan Lake soon. People tell me it's very nice, but the only marina there has a waiting list for slips. Anyone know how to find a used trailer for a 250 WK? Maybe we can dry store the Pau Hana.

Fred,
We were on Lake Lainer for a few years, and moored at Aqualand. Moved to NC about 5 years ago. Now sail the Pamlico and keep the boat tied up at the house.

Check out this site, I believe a lot of these guys sail on Jordan or use to.

I used to live in Raleigh. I sailed a buccaneer 18 on Jordan. The part of the lake deep enough for a 250 is pretty small. The majority of lme Jordan isn't suited to anything other than a day sailor.

Fred;
It might be a bit of a hike, but kerr lake is beautiful, it's the largest lake in North Carolina and is controlled by the Army Corps of Engineers. Aprox 1/3 of the shore line is parks, 1/3 wild life preserve and 1/3 private development. I have sailed my c250 on this lake for the past 12 years, my wife and I love it. I know of at least two other c250's on the lake. Kerr is located just off of Rt 85 about 45 miles north east of Durham. The largest marina, mostly sailboats is Steel Creek, and is located off of rt 39.
Good luck with your search,

If I may... I've sailed Lake Norman a bunch... I know it's an hour from you. It's not overcrowded (yet). it's a lot larger than you'd think. There is a decent sailing community. It's pretty flat around the lake so the winds are pretty consistent.

I travel 50 minutes to the lake and get there 3-4 times a week... so 1:05 isn't horrible (depending where you land with your house).

I've heard good things about Kerr lake, but I personally have not sailed it.

Lake Hickory is narrow with High sides (terrible sailing and lots of motorboat traffic).

Lake Wylie is supposed to be pretty good, but that's even farther for you.

I think the place to check out first is Lake Norman Yacht club in Mooresville... http://www.lakenormanyachtclub.com/
We (first my father, then my brother) members of Lake Norman Sailing Club, having known the former owner many years ago... but it's a quieter club, but I suppose that depends on what you are looking for... https://www.facebook.com/LakeNormanSailingClub
