After having my 9.9 Yamaha gum up yet again I am considering an electric motor. I've read about Torqueedos but they cost about half of what I paid for the boat. I sail on the Neuse River near Pamlico Sound and do not go out in winds above 15 kts. Would something like a trolling motor with 50 or so lbs. of thrust work? Thanks.

I use a 2hp Honda. It will push the boat to over 5 knots with no head wind or current. You can probably find out on the internet how to convert Hp to thrust.
I remember researching electric motors before I bought the Honda and concluding that except for the really powerful and expensive models designed to replace small gas engines they were unsuitable for my needs.
In other words, the typical trolling motor will not be satisfactory for most uses.

Minn Kota used to sell a 3HP electric trolling motor... we used to use it for fishing years ago. it'd likely work, for very light days with no current. I use a Mercury 2.2 gas, and it's NOT enough when the wind pipes up at all (over 10 knots, and you can't motor into a headwind).

I think these boats do best with a 4-5hp motor, it's ON my list to replace my 2.2 with a 4. When I purchased the boat, it had a real nice Mariner 6hp, but it was a beast (heavy), and had an external tank... I didn't want the tank below in the lockers, because they are open to below (not safe for down below). I wanted an integral tank motor, and the 2.2 works great. Sadly it's a no tranny motor, all forward, if its running it's pushing you forward. You can spin it around for reverse, that's it.

So something with forward/neutral, or ideally forward/neutral/reverse is best.

If it were me with a nicely working 9.9 and wanting something smaller, I'd sell the 9.9 and buy a 4 or 5 with internal tank (but that's just me).

I know this doesn't help in regards to alternative motors, but are you running gas with ethanol in your Yamaha? My outboard mechanic called me several years ago and told me to make sure that I run only non-ethanol gas in my Yamaha. He said he is overwhelmed with business cleaning out carbs, especially Honda's, because of the ethanol dissolving seals and rubber.

Fleet is giving good advice... I personally don't follow it, and have already once had to rebuild a carb due to lacquering in the carb bowl. You absolutely have to burn off all remaining fuel in the carb every time you use the motor.

Probably too late but I have been using a 50 lb thrust trolling motor all summer on an inland lake, no current, and fairly protected marina. It came with the boat and I started using it while the outboard was waiting to be worked on. I found the trolling motor very convenient so have not made the outboard repair a priority. It is easy to raise out of the water and it stands straight up. It works fine as long as I am not going directly into wind over about 10 knots. I would not want to have to depend on it to get through current.
