Two years ago I rigged a second reef. I did it pretty much like the first reef, with a single line and a block in the aft reef cringle. Since all the sheaves in the boom were in use, I ran the 2nd reef line outside the boom:

I never found myself in conditions that required a second reef, so last year I did not bother to rig the 2nd reef. However, this year I will be cruising further down into the Delaware Bay, so would like to have it available again.

My biggest complaint with this system was that when using the first reef (which I use frequently) the lines for the 2nd reef would hang down into the cockpit, and could actually be a hazard if they caught someone's neck or other body part when the boom swings over.

So I was wondering about using a reefing hook (or some other quick-attach mechanism) to allow me to move the 1st reef tackle to the 2nd reef cringles on the sail. I'd anticipate doing this very infrequently, so the tackle would typically stay at the 1st reefing point, but available to move only if needed.

Do any of you have any suggestions for this?

Hi Mate. Sorry for the delay in response. I use the same reefing line for both but have attached a light block coupled with a Small snap hook ( could use a small snap shackle but hook is lighter) on the reefing line to attach to a 2mm stainless steel loop that I crimped on to both the 1st and second crinkles both tack and clew.

Pretty easy to use as all I do is first put Velcro straps through the 1st reef clew to hold it down on to the boom then unclip the reefing line from the first reef and clip up to the second reef- pull it in as normal and away you go, no loose lines and only one line used- someone else on the forum suggested the same earlier which is what made me think of it. Will take a photo next time I'm out but very basic

Hope that helps cheers. Ian
