In checking out a bunch of pictures of various C250's, it looks like most have their outboard motor mounted directly to the stern without an adjustable motor mount. The boat I purchased has an adjustable motor mount bolted through the transom. So, now I am curious as to why. Any thoughts?
Thanks for the comments David. I never thought about the turning of the motor. I can see your point there. The Mercury 9.9 that I have has the shifting and throttle in the tiller, so it's not a problem with the motor on the mount. I just launched the boat yesterday and put it in the slip. I haven't had a chance to back out of the slip yet, so I don't know how the boat will respond to just the rudder blade without turning the motor. I think I have an original rudder as well which might not be as good from what I understand.
Craig, If you're not in an area with currents or tides, you'll likely be OK. Having the shift & throttle on the tiller is really nice. My Tohatsu shifted on the right side, and the paddle would hit the transom, and the tiller on the other side would hit the fuel locker, so I could maybe turn it 1/16th of a turn, not sufficient for my situation (river currents, tides and funneled wind).
My original 8hp two stroke Johnson worked admirably directly on the transom, plus it was easy to hook up a hard link (search the forum for that term), or could have just as easily been hooked up with one of Arlyn's soft link (also search) connections. If you have maneuverability problems, I highly recommend reading Arlyn's web page on the subject, very-very informative, and you'll find LOTS of discussions about it on here for the C-250 boats. Kinda pressed for time, or I'd find the links for you, but use the Google search feature on the left side of the page, and you'll easily find them. A search for "Arlyn soft link" will find his stuff, and a search for "hard link" will find mine and many other folk's designs, what worked, and what didn't, etc.
Craig, I have had my Honda 8 on transom from the day I bought it. I see no issues. I have her in a slip w/ a tight fairway and am able to back out w/o any problems. Cant say same for some power boater who backed into my outboard and bent shaft. Perhaps it wouldn't have stuck out so far if on a mount. See my pic below. I have been is some moderate rough seas and yes prop has been temporarily airborne but that can happen with any outboard. Steve
