it is so easy to drop your tools when doing that, and kerplunk they are gone.. I use a stanley wood handle scratch awl and some small channel locks. Lots of folks add a lanyard to tools.
If you could find a punch small enough it would probably work better than the awl as it easily bent.
The best solution is to never use closed body turnbuckles, use the open body ones. A friend lost his forestay one year and saved his rig by going immediately downwind. I replaced my closed body turnbuckles the following week. When the rigger removed the backstay turnbuckle, it literally disintegrated!!!
