Could anyone who owns a 250 WK with the diesel auxilary please comment on average cruising speed under power. Someone I know has been admiring my 250 WB and this is the one question I can't answer.
If Blair doesn't see and respond to your post...email him at bdehuff@aol.com
He is the only one that owned a deisel and shared on the forum. He has moved up to a larger Catalina but will answer your question I'm sure. I do recall that initially, he wondered about the cruising speed himself as his boat wasn't reaching hull speed. If my memory is good, he was reaching around 5.3 knots at reccomended cruising rpms. But, I think his altitude in Colorado came into play.
Unless I'm in a hurry and have gas to burn, that is what I cruise with the Honda 8 - 4 stroke. I think of the outboard in thirds, it takes 1/3 throttle to get to 5.3 knots, another third to get to 6.2 and that last third will just churn water.

I did initially comment on the cruising speed with an inboard diesel, as Arlyn says. Arlyn is correct that the cruising speed was a little slow, I assume due to altitude. You lose some power at 6000 foot elevation (Lake Tahoe). I could get about 5.3 kts at 3400 rpm as Arlyn mentioned. I could get 5.5 at 3600 rpm, but it wasn't worth the fuel. Since I did not trailer my boat I did not have an opportunity to sail it at sea level. Therefore, I unfortunately cannot provide any input on the relative performance of the diesel at a lower elevation. One of the disadvantages of not trailering your boat. It would have been an interesting comparison.
I'm currently boatless waiting for one to be delivered in April. I plan to stay in touch with this forum. The only sailing I can do right now is the virtual kind. I will find out the name and email address of the person who bought my boat (it's still at Lake Tahoe)and encourage them to join the association/participate in the C25/250 forums. Since there are only a handfull of C250 WK's with a diesel, if anyone is interested in discussing the pro's and con's I'm glad to accommodate.
Where are you located? What RPM do you cruise at (3,400)? What kind of prop do you have? (Mine was a two blade Martec folding prop).
Seems you should be getting better than 4.5 kts at normal cruising RPM's. I was losing about 15 to 20% of my power at 6200 foot elevation. Had no trouble achieving 5 kts, and I added a LOT of weight to my boat.
