Wow! Almost like the I-95 bridge in Greenwich, CT in 1983, where a complete section fell into the Mianus River. (The pronunciation, incidentally, is with a <i>short</i> "a". ) The best guess was an overweight big-rig caused too much stress on a pin at one corner of the section. I knew a guy who was in an airport limo that arrived right then and barely missed flying into the river.
Then there was the more recent one in Minnesota...
It sounds like possibly only three vehicles involved, and all were rescued. That's just amazing if it's true. WSDOT is doing a bit of tap-dancing in an interview and only stating the obvious like "the bridge has collapsed into the Skagit River"...duh. News folks are pressing him for number of victims/survivors, etc.
This will be a big loss to commerce between BC & WA for months not to mention commutes.
National news is reporting an over height truck passed over the bridge shortly before it collapsed and the top of the trailer tore a piece of metal on one of the beams in the top of the bridge. You could see the tear in one picture they showed.
