Kinda cold here too. 47 right now and still dropping. Very cool and windy Sat and Sun. Monday looks nicer with a gentle breeze. So after I'm done playing Taps I'll be headed out for our first daysail in two weeks!
I had been hoping to sail down the river to watch fireworks tonight, but the Admiral says no way in this weather.
At risk of being non PC, I object to the subject of this thread. There is nothing "happy" about Memorial Day. It is a day when we honor and pay homage to our military dead. Not the military dead that died of old age or in a car wreck, but the dead that are listed as KIA.
We have a neighbor lady who hates Memorial Day. Her husband was a Naval Aviator, shot down and declared missing for 10 years before DOD changed his status from MIA to KIA. It is not a happy day for her. And, for those of us that have BTDT...it's not a happy day for us either.

I regret that I failed to recognize the inappropriateness of the literal interpretation of the subject header. However, the OP's full message seemed to be wishing us all a happy weekend, and celebrating the start of the new season. And there is nothing inappropriate about that.
FWIW, I played "Taps" at our town's Memorial Day observance, as I have done every Memorial Day since I moved here 13 years ago. Every year I struggle as the guy who leads the town's ragtag band takes out festive marches to play while people are walking to the cemetery down the road. This year I could not stand it, so I walked away and refused to continue playing his marches. I suspect he's really pissed at me, because he seems totally clueless about the appropriate tone to set.
Your point is a good one, and makes me realize that the recent proliferation of fireworks exhibits on Memorial Day weekend may be inappropriate. Unfortunately, nearby casinos and baseball teams will not let that deter them from doing whatever they need to to draw a crowd. The casino that I had hoped to sail to was scheduled to shoot them off Friday, but rain that night and high winds that next night caused them to be postponed to Monday night, which could be considered inappropriate timing.
Lost too many friends developed during 25 years in the Military.
However, not only do I remember them specifically on Memorial Day, but I also plan each year to make the most of the day made possible by their commitment.
