May 24th, 13 Just purchased a 1985 223 the centerboard will not go down. Can anyone tell me what issues if any are had with the centerboard? It appears that the two nuts in the bilge have been re bedded and replaced. What should I expect with this issue. Any info appreciated

Walt

Hi Walt. I'd try the Trailersailor.com forum. Your issue is pretty model-specific, and the people here own 25' Catalinas. The folks over there own just about everything under about 26'.

Not sure about the 223 but I had a 19 and the centerboard was just fiberglass not much weight. If I pulled it up to tight the rope would wedge in the trunk and it wouldn't come down. if I jumped up and down a couple of time it would drop. After that I tied to remember to not pull it up to tight.

I own a 223 and being a shoal keel centerboard hull the centerboard has little weight and can become wedged easily by debris or muscles. You need to get it on a lift/crane and have a look. FWIW the boat only loses a few degrees of pointing and does not gain any appreciable leeway with the board up.

This might not apply, but I owned a centerboarder that had two lines (actually one continuous) for pulling the board down and holding it there, as well as for pulling it up. If while pulling one, the other wasn't held somewhat taut, it could jam alongside the board in the trunk. This could cause the board to jam either up or down.

Then one winter the fiberglass board apparently froze (saturated with water, I guess), swelled inside the trunk, and had to be replaced.
