Great day for sailing here today, winds 15 and clear skies. Motor was running good at dock, we pushed off and turned out the slip and realized that we had no propulsion...motor still runing good but no forward thrust, looks like a bent prop with a barnacle or two added.. We are committed at this point with the wind on our stern and a narrow channel. Up went the main, the SailGate(mast gate) worked great. We sailed north towards Hampton Roads for about 1 1/2 hours with steady wind. The return trip was just as nice, other than contending with an overtaking freighter...we were tacking across in front of him. And this wasn't really a big deal. Capt hailed me on the radio to verify my intention. He was appreciative and thanked us for responding to his radio call. We made good time heading toward our inlet....knowing we would have issues battling the narrow channel with no motor. The decision was made to douse the main and try to use the jib in the inlet...no go. Circle around, pull the jib and re-raise the main. The main goes up and now has a gapping hole in it. WTH did that come from? It had done great all day. OK douse the broken main...drop anchor. Ummmmm, hey we are still moving...Anchor never set. Up comes the anchor and out goes the jib again. OK lets plan on making circles for a bit. The dreadful call to boat-tow is made. Glad I have the coverage, they responded quickly (20 minutes) and safely returned us to our slip. But had a great day overall, despite the new expenditures now planned in the next week or so. My sails are 30 years old and have probably never been serviced. Oh well, home and safe, and a great day of sailing.

No thrust... Is this an inboard? (A lot of barnacles could do it, but...) Or if an outboard, is the shear-pin sheared? But yes, your main didn't owe you anything. I am, however, a little surprised you couldn't make headway on the jib alone. Is it a 110%? Bigger? I couldn't point quite as high with my 130 alone as I could with both sails up, but it wasn't that far off, as long as I didn't try to overdo it--eased off a little and sheeted out just a little.
