Thanks Paul Much Appreciated- I borrowed a friends Symmetrical off an Elliot 7 and flew it this morning. Very Enjoyable - we managed 8.2knots in about 11knots of wind so very happy with that- still keen to get some sizes before I drop some money on the wrong item , thanks for your help!cheers Ian
The boat I just purchased came with a symmetrical spinnaker. The boat is the tall rig. I could measure the sail and let you know. I will probably not use it. The boat did not come with a pole. I also have an asymmetrical from a similar size boat that I will use.
Hi Craig, that would be fantastic, I thought of flying an Assymetrical however I feel the boat is too tender in anything but very light airs and I wanted to be able to give it a good nudge going downwind in wind up to 15 knts. So I figured that realy I was only going to use a kite for 120 degrees or more as I struggle to carry my 135%genny at 10- 12 knots let alone a shy kite.( I Usually have it back towards the 110% mark at that wind speed unless I have rail meat to balance it out((Picture attached))
BTW there is a fair amount of unused space outside the lifleines for sitting on the rail
Thanks for that luff measurement that confirms what I need to do, cheers.
Hi John -yep right boat still can have some fun but very dry compared to a race boat plus the crockery!
Hi Paul - c250 fin + 3 lifelines + lazy sheets hanging outboard = lots a fun. We do undo the bottom two at the back though so we can hike with the tiller extension.
Hi Rick - I figure right or wrong that the genny track has a lot more bolts holding it down than the winch which is what I am hanging off in the pic.
It seems like I still sail it like a dinghy and we were going to rename it "dinghyot" but others were saying we should rename it " watch out for the crockery" so I left well enough alone and "Argo" she remains. The crockery not spilling is now a source of pride particularly when we anchor up and everyone gets a plate- very civilized.
We do have a lot of fun with it when the admiral and the little mates aren't on board ( we keep the dish very flat for them)but the only time the rail actually gets in the water is when we round up occasionally, it is a very dry boat and that helps in a bay like Moreton were we do get some chop when the wind gets up
We also fitted a transom shower for the hell of it.
Thanks all of you for having a think about it for me, I just bought the spin online this morning and will have it next week will post photos of how we will deal with the topping lift, kicker and tweakers
My c250 fin + 3 lifelines + lazy sheets hanging outboard comment was because I did not know that Catalina made a C250 fin keel, only Wing & Water Ballast models, and it's the first C250 (or C25) that I have seen with more than a single lifeline, the Lazy sheet tension would make a definite sail shape change, I think the equivalent of having the jib traveler all the way forward.
Hi Paul I posted some pics of her on an earlier thread " one of a kind" you can see them (lifelines) better there. The lazy sheet being pulled on does pull it in a bit but the working sheet was pulled in super tight so did not make a big difference. Surprising but there is not that much weight being applied - just mainly for balance. We fell off once in a big swell. Lucky the water was warm. Cheers Ian
I have a symmetrical spinnaker ..I am still learning but you need a lot of gear if your using a pole .. plus the 250 is slippery up front and its tight working quarters . but with that said i'm just cruising with mine , so what else is there to do but set up the spinnaker or hang off the boat !!!
I found a shorter sail might be better , mine is 28` i think . also my pole is a 9` forspare , when going down wind and the pole is all the way kicked out , the clue on the other side is too close to the forstay , when the pole is low on the deck . but it does reach real nice .
I was pricing a new one and they had a deal on a used one
