I just got a Catalina 25, 1970. It's a nice boat, and I'm still getting used to all of the particulars as I am learning about how it is built.
One of the projects I have to look at involves the adjustable pop-up table in the main saloon. I have an L shaped bench seat around it, and a large (2.5"?) pipe and fittings that guide it as it rises and lowers. It appears that there used to be hardware for locking the table up in place, but it doesn't exist anymore on this boat, as whoever was the previous owner decided to sleep on the L/table as a full time bed.
How is tension applied to the pipe hardware in the original setup? There's a threaded hole on the outer pipe, and the table pipe has a long notch in it. It would appear as if there was originally a backing nut or shoe that was threaded on the inside of the pipe, but I don't know how it was setup exactly.
Can anyone either describe how it's setup, or post pictures? Or maybe offer a solution for replacing this hardware?
Hmmm. Better check to make sure it is really a Catalina 25. I'm not a naval historian but I don't think the Catalina 25 was made as early as 1970. Check the year and manufacturer again. This website pertains to Catalina 25s only as early as 1977. Take a look at the pictures in the photo gallery and see if you in fact have a Catalina 25.
Your description on how it was originally setup is correct. I am not aware of anyplace to obtain identical replacement hardware so you will probably need to devise your own solution. The table top is so heavy that even with the correct hardware the table was wobbly so most just leave it down as your previous owner did. I through drilled a hole that I put a bolt and wing nut through when I want to raise mine. It does not let me adjust it (except fully up or down) and it is still somewhat wobbly. Perhaps replacing the entire pedestal with a similar motorhome solution is a better idea?
we raise ours up fully or down fully, so a through pin is a clever solution. The original appears to be a large backing nut and a bolt with large handle on it. You should be able to find something useable in Grainger, or McMaster
There should be a bolt that has a large oblong plastic knob on it. This tightens a small (sort of a wedge) inside the large outer pipe, against the inner pipe which holds it in place. I have also drilled a hole through the two pipes in the elevated position in which I place a pin to better secure them. Look around and maybe you can find the missing parts stashed away somewhere. If not find a bolt that works in the outer threaded pipe, and drill an appropriate sized hole in the inner pipe, so that the bolt can thread into it when it’s up
