Yesterday I went out and was checking things over and noticed that the cooling water coming out of the cooling port behind the outboard engine was not a solid, single stream as usual, but was split and schpritzing out of the port. I figured that somehow my impeller went bad (since I replaced it in spring 2012), or some foreign material got into the cooling water. I put my hand into the spray and it was cool to the touch, so I know the engine is getting sufficient cooling nd not overheating. Has anyone ever had this happen with their outboard? I went to Boats.net to order a new one - pending the forum's advice.

I'd wager it's not the impeller unless you ran it out of the water and broke a blade off. Take a small but stiff wire and probe up in the hole to see if you can get something to break free. Might help to do it when the motor is running at idle.
Yup--I've cleared the pisser with a wire on several outboards many times--even my 225. Among the tiny bits that can obstruct it are bits of crystalline salt that break free somewhere in the system. Try it, and then relax.
I was just showing an engine to sell and no water. After the client left I found the end fitting obstructed. The end is smaller than the line so this happens.
Happens all the time on my engine, Salt deposits/foreign material partial blockage. I keep a paper clip straightened out on the boat and I just insert it in the pisser hole while the engine is running. This usually solves the problem.
Gents - thank you much! Will give the wire treatment a try. Dave, I originally thought of the impeller because the water inlet is protected with a mesh-like cover and could not imagine anything getting inside. At the end of my sail I generally head all the way up to the fresh-water inlet to the harbor creek to rinse out the engine's cooling system. But you never know!
Today I disconnected the cooling water tube connected to the pisser. I took a piece of wire and cleared the orifice and found a tiny clam. No idea how it got in there. I let the hose run for awhile. I reattached it afterwards and it ran fine. Live & learn.
