I have a 1990 C25 wing keel. Every year I fill the water tank under the starboard side seat. Every year after I put in the water I notice the bilge is full and the water tank has lost most of the water I put in. I never have any problems the rest of the season for I have a dock space all season. I can not figure out why or how this happens. Any ideas?
I don't know if the setee construction on your boat is the same as mine - 1980 - but have you ever taken the plywood off the fiberglass setee base and looked at the tank? On mine there's a yellow plug towards the aft end of the tank on the top. This has a hole in it for venting purposes. If you fill the water tank and the deck pipe all the way flush with the deck, a stream of water will shoot out the vent and collect in the bilge untill the water level in the deck pipe has fallen level with the top of the tank. If your tank is full when you launch your boat, the entire time you are on an angle at the launch ramp water will be shooting out of the vent hole. If the entire vent plug has somehow come out - which is possible - there will be a lot of water gushing out into the bilge and I could see where you could lose over 2/3 of a tankfull. I wait till I'm at the dock to fill the tank. Also I drilled a 1 1/2" hole in the plywood directly over the vent hole and covered it with a thin scrap of plexiglass so I can see if I've overfilled the tank by just lifting the cushion. If water is shooting out the vent after filling I quickly pump a gallon or so down the drain to keep it from going into the bilge. Heeling while sailing will also cause an overfilled tank to leak water out the vent hole into the bilge.
Catalina must have changed the venting system, My boat is an 87 and the vent is on the deck next to the fill. The vent on deck is connected to the tank with 1/2" tubing.
