Servicing Enkes #12 Winch...

I removed my (2) Enkes #12 winches from the coamnings today and would like to disassemble them for servicing. (Silicone grease?)

As the mounting bolts are spinning freely in the housing it also appears that disassembly will be necessary to re-mount them :>(

The only thing I can see that looks promising for disassembly is that there is some sort of rather delicate looking stainless ring on the top that might be coaxed out of its groove.

Any advice and guidance are greatly appreciated. These look to be very nice winches and I don't want to me$$ them up.

Currently maintaining two holes in the water...'77 Venture 23 and new to the family,
'78 Catalina 25

I couldn’t find a link on servicing the Enkes winches and the Pyacht servicing page for the Lewmars is gone but they do have a schematic page for[url="http://www.pyacht.net/online-store/scstore/graphics/Lew_WG_67.gif"] Lewmar Winches #6 & 7 [/url] it might help.
One suggestion is to take a box and cut a hole the size of the winch in the bottom and fit the box over the winch. Then when you drop a part (not if) it will fall in the box. If the boat is in the water I think this step is a must if it’s on land it will save valuable time hunting for that pall that went “SPROING!”.

I have a pair of enkes wiches. They're the two speed model AR18's. Yes these are nice winches, I love mine. You're on the right track. Just take a small flat-head screwdriver and take off the small clip you see on top. The winch cover can then easily be removed showing the hidden screws. If you're going to service the winch you run into a couple more clips that can be removed in a similar fashion. Very simple dissambly and reassembly. I finished services the two of mine in a couple of hours. Good Luck. J24's all the way.

Thanks Moxie, I got the top clips off pretty easily and re-lubed the internals. The closest call I had was when I nearly lost one of the little pawl springs as I was putting the winches back on the boat.

I was sweating that one out for a moment or two until I found the errant spring.
