A while back I lost my inboard engine due to overheating. Sailing back to the slip was done without incident. I removed the engine-that is a story by itself. I finally found a company to rebuild it and shipped it off. Yesterday I got it back. The wood crate had a tire mark on it and was wrapped in shrink rap. I did not think to much of it. I opened up the crate to find that they must have dropped the crate on its side. The engine was no linger screwed to the wood mounting blocks but rattling around in the crate. The exhaust manifold mounting studs were broke off or bent. I called Estes Trucking , got the run around for about 15 minutes and finally got to talk to someone who said they would e-mail the claim forms, but advised me that the claim would me denied. I got the e-mail with no form attached. Lesson learned Insure all shipments of significant value. Looks like a battle is about to start. In the mean time I will continue to repair the damage and re-assemble the engine and install. I will be on a two month RV trip in two weeks so may not get the boat wet until late September or October. Also doing some other up-grades.

That really stinks!!!! Good luck with the adjustments. Just think of it as the shipper pre-stressed the engine for you. She should be able to handle anything now...

First thing I would do is call the company that rebuilt the engine and discuss the situation with them. There's a good chance they use Estes on a regular basis and can probably provide some pressure from their end.

Second, the line that Estes is feeding you is a standard line of BS they tell everyone. If they accept the load they have to be responsible for the damage.

Did you discuss the condition of the crate and the tire marks on the crate with the driver before he left? Did you note it on the Bill of Lading that you had to sign when the driver dropped it off? Did you take any pictures of the damage before you removed the engine from the crate? These things would go a long way in helping your fight.

I'd still take pictures of the broken manifold bolts and the marks they should have left in the wooden crate. Might still be able to show it was damaged en-route.

It sounds like the damage was hidden inside the crate so be sure when you file your claim you mention it was hidden damage that could not be seen at the time of delivery.

The company I work for uses Estes on a regular basis. If you don't get a claim form let me know and I'll see if I can find one at work.

Hey Howard, where is your RV trip taking you? If you are up here, (Niagara Falls-ish) I have a spare engine that I might be able to hook you up with if things don't work out with the old one. Of course the fuel bill would be higher than the engine's worth.

Gary

I had to pick up the crate at the terminal. They loaded it my pick up. I have the form and have filled out most of it. Need some help from shipper for repair cost info. I took lots of photos. I have an attorney friend that said he would help if I need it.

This is a short trip to visit grandkids & family . We will be in AR, MO, IL, WI & KS.

We were in your area a few years ago-beautiful country.

Engine should be OK just more delays and extra work. I did find some replacement parts to replace the damaged ones.

This reminds me of my high school years - I spent summers working at a Honda motorcycle dealership. Bikes came from Japan crated with forks, front wheel, seat, taillight, and handlebars stored separately. We opened one bike to discover the engine mounts broken off - the engine fell through the frame and was sitting in the bottom of the crate. We reinspected the crate - not one sign of mistreatment. We figured it must have fallen off the top of several vertically stacked crates and landed square - right side up. Honda rep was very puzzled.
