Did a quick search, but didn't find much in the way of an answer. I race more than cruise and recently moved my boat to a Sail Club right near out Lake's starting area. Am considering storing my 9HP outboard and using an electric trolling motor just to get in and out. Will allow me to drop 60+ lbs off the rear plus the weight of the gas and can.
Anyone use of one of these...Suggestions as to what size/thrust might be best.
I have become weary of the ill effects of current gas ingredients on small motors.
Last fall (when our gasoline outboard wouldn't start) used a 37 pound thrust trolling motor - and I installed it again this spring. Though it gets the job done - I would be reluctant to depend on it in open water on a gusty day. We raise and lower the sails in our sheltered bay.
IMHO: I have also wondered if a larger electric trolling motor might be adequate for inland waters, however with the recent weather issues we have been having, my decision was to keep my 8hp outboard in lieu of finding a replacement. The trolling motor just would not be adequate to move my C-25 in and out of the marina area upwind with anything greater than 7-10 mph winds. If you are in a very protected marina and current and winds are not an issue, a larger trolling motor might do the trick.
