Decided to remove 30+ yrs of anti fouling paint and take a look at what I would call pimples below my water line.

My hull is full of the pimples, the size of the head of a pin. They have no water/acid in them. It takes sanding away the gel coat to expose the orifice totally.

So far the job has been hell, with only 5% of the pimples opened up, or sanded deep enough. My friend says I'm crazy to continue, he says: seal the exposed ones, barrier coat and paint the hull. Overall, the boat may not be worth it and they don't seem to be storing water/fluid.

Any opinions? The hull is 75% bare (hand scraped for well over a month at this point), but I've missed half my season.

Had a friend find much of the same thing on his Coronado 34. Not blisters if there is no water intrusion. But be sure to use skim of epoxy first to assure no fiberglass fibers are sticking out, they will wick moisture under your paint. Add barrier coat and the bottom paint of your choice and GET OUT SAILING.

Hand scraping, Palm Sander, Sand/Soda blast or a chemical stripper are all methods for removing the remaining paint.

I had those pimples on my Cat 14.2. Best I can tell they were "road rash." These were pimples created from gravel flying off the road (lots of road miles on it)...

But yeah, get the pimples level, either by building up the bottom, or leveling them all.

Soda blasting works... I've been dying to try it myself... I hand scraped my hull, then 60, then 80 grit then 150... then Interprotect 2000e... I didn't do that on the Capri 14, just this one.

Pictures above are bigger than the pimples mine had. But yeah, ultimately they'll blister from osmosis.

my pimples are much smaller than that photo.
I suppose some sort of moisture check/meter could gauge the severity of osmosis/water penetration?

Like I said, it appears to have no water/acid inside these small cavities

yes - gonna "cut bait and fish". Still about 8 working days (dry days) to accomplish the last of the scrape, clean, epoxy, and, 2 barrier coats and 1 or 2 anti fouling.....shooting for July 20th.

Will post pics of my pimples soon (add applause here!)

Anybody remove 30+ years of anti-fouling by hand: scrape, power wash, chemical remover.....I'll never be the same....buy stock in Ibuprofen!

I had them right along the boot stripe, the size of pin heads, just above the waterline. The surveyor said they were common, due to algae or something like that, and to ignore them and go sailing.

I hand scraped the bottom paint from Passage in 2009. There were no pimples but the paint was completely chipping off and there were a few voids and chips. If I had pimples, I probably would have sanded them down.
I scraped all the paint off - it was a huge project (3 weekends). I faired the bottom, cleaned with acetone and did barrier coat.
Since then I've painted with ablative paint each year except 2012 (old paint was still in good shape), and scraped and repainted this year.
Ever since I added barrier coat, the old paint falls right off if I scrape it. This way, I haven't gotten a buildup.

Hand scraped, sanded, scraped some more, filled/faired, sanded some more, barrier coated, then sanded again, then VC17.. it was very much original bottom paint that I got down to ( and through). NOT a fun job at all, nope I hope NEVER to do it again.

You mentioned soda blasting, which is what I did with my boat a couple of years ago. I'm glad I got it done, but I'll never do it again. At least not with the equipment I used last time (Harbor Freight blaster & too small of a compressor). If I do it again, I'll pay one of the portable blaster guys to come do it in a day instead of spread out over several months. Since it was VC-17 I was taking off, I think a few gallons of ethanol and a bunch of rags might have gotten it done sooner, but it's a hard call. Hopefully I never have to do anything but scuff the old paint (Pettit Trinidad SR), and apply a new coat just before it goes back in the water. Can't leave it out of the water for more than a couple of days or the coat gets too hard and the copper can no longer leach out of the paint..

Finished scraping, filling cavities with epoxy, sanding and 4 coats barrier. I have one coat of anti-fouling on and probably do the second later today. Looks great, smooth and no sign of the pimples.

I have a launch date for this Friday.

Hope that is the end of that job!
