I use my boat hook as a prop with one end stuck in the corner formed by the aft berth near the head wall.

A word of caution on that ladder; if you raise and lower the ladder a lot, it can "ratchet" the pivot screws out (don't ask how I know...). Check them periodically and/or put a drop of Loctite on the threads...

Thanks, John and Al. The boat hook trick worked and I will check pivot screws (and loctite them). Al, my wife loved the art work on your post...

Just a Midwest way of doing things, we use a board the same with as the cabin top, lift up the steps, then slide the board across, that boat hook thing never worked out for us.

Whenever I try using the boat hook to prop up the stairs, it interferes with the head door opening. Not a problem as long as you don't need to use the head, but for longer term, the board seems to work better.

No, that's not the problem. To prop the bottom step, the hook is far enough aft to be forward of the door hinge, so it interferes on the port side. I guess if I propped it on the starboard side it would not interfere with the door, but then it's kind of in the middle of the floor. The board seems to avoid both of those problems. But my 1x3 is just a tiny bit too thick to fit into the slider slot, so I need to trim it before I can use it.

When spending the night on the boat I just use a newer bungee and hook it on the track. Two doubles security.
