I have a 1985 Catalina 25, tall rig, fixed keel. My 1988 15 hp Mariner engine has finally kicked the bucket and the local marina does not think it is possible to get the necessary parts to fix it. With a good portion of the sailing season still head, I am considering the online purchase of a 2013 Tohatsu 9.8 hp motor with a 25 inch ultra long shaft. I am ready to pull the trigger, but before spending $2,200 I need some assurance that I am making the right decision. Any pluses or minuses would greatly be appreciated. Many thanks. Larry

I have a 2009 Nissan 9.8 (same motor) It's been running flawlessly for me. I'm very pleased with it.

Larry,
There are many-many topics on this subject if you spend a few minutes searching for them (Search link is in upper right of this page, and a Google search is directly to the left).

We bought our 2008 Tohatsu 9.8 XLS from Online Outboards, and I think you can still get a bit of a price break if you order it through our site ($50?) if you're a member.

Edit: I just checked, the discount is actually $75, so if you're not currently a member of the forum, the amount you'll save way more than makes up the cost of membership. If you are a member, just click on the "Members Area" to the left and follow the prompts to find discounts for various things through the membership.

Any problems I've experienced with ours has not been the outboard's fault, most can be traced back to dodgy E-10 gasoline and it's effects on equipment (you'll find many threads on this as well). I'd buy another one without hesitation.

My boat came with an almost new 2012 Tohatsu 9.8 with the extra long shaft and high thrust prop. Charges well at a moderate RPM. Boat speed is fine with lots of torque.
I really like mine.

Just my personal experience... I bought 2012 ultra long shaft with electric start. Absolutely happy with it! I planned to get the model with control box (as i had control box on my old evinrude), but decide to save couple hundred $ and spend it on other upgrades. I don't regret making that decision at all.

Here's a thread on the various merits of Tohatsu, Honda, Nissan, and Mercury outboards (hint, Tohatsu makes three of them): http://www.catalina-capri-25s.org/forum/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true& whichpage=0.96& TOPIC_ID=24787&

Thanks for all the great advice. I ordered the Tohatsu 9.8 with the 25 inch shaft yesterday. I also took advantage of the $75.00 offered by OnlineOutboards.com to members of the Catalina International Association. I hope to be sailing again in early August. Best, Larry

I purchased the Tohatsu on line and had it delivered to a dealer who was willing to work with me. The local deliver wanted $400 more for the motor and did not have it in stock. He wanted money upfront and then weeks to get it. Ordered online, paid with credit card, free shipping, saved $400+ dollars. The other dealer took delivery, called me when it came in, 3 days, and I picked it up the next day.
Good motor, just always use fresh gas.
