My vang was 1/4" and lasted 23 years without replacement, and I raced her vigorously. Vangs were rigged with 1/4" line on several thousand C25s since about 1977, and I have never heard of a single 1/4" vang line failure since I have been sailing C25s (about 1980). You can, of course, rig your boat as you wish, but generally, increasing line size is unnecessary, and the oversized lines don't run as freely through the blocks as the recommended size line.
My Boom Vang uses a 3/8" line. I use larger line 7/16" for my halyard and sheets because I have difficulty holding lighter lines and prefer the thicker line.
I agree, 1/4" has adequate strength, I'm thinking from the hand comfort point of view. I didn't mention that I will be running this through a rope clutch . . . so the line has to be large enough for the clutch to grab it. Thanks for the replies.
Rope clutches are sized for a target line size range, and generally have the highest holding power on the largest line that fits. So then I'd pick what best fits your clutch.
I like the Lewmar clutches and use the 8-10mm ones for halyards and 6-8mm ones for secondary control lines. My vang is 3/8" and shares a 8-10mm clutch with the main halyard. This is on a little bigger boat than the C-25 though.
