I have an old neglected 82' Cat 25. The gelcoat seems to be beyond buffing, as I see fiberglass underneath in many places. Anyone have opinions on pros and cons about reapplying gelcoat or painting the hull?

Gel coat is more durable than paint, but hard on the wallet. Challenge with paint is you'll be chasing scratches the rest of the time you own the boat. You can see the fiberglass? Is that a result of scratches or wear? '82 is pretty young for needing re-coating.

If you have the skill to apply gelcoat yourself, that would be preferable. If not, I would recommend painting it. If you paint it to match the existing color, minor scratches are much less likely to show.

If you paint it yourself, read up on the process, and pick a good 2-part marine paint. There's spraying, and there's rolling and tipping. Scratches are most especially a problem when the new color contrasts with the old--e.g., flag blue over white. The other problem with scratches and dings in paint is they can't be "smoothed out" with some patching and sanding--paint is sorta like metal foil on the hull. After some scratching and peeling, the only solution to restore a "new look" is to completely remove the paint and start over. I know people who have had it done. (It gets to be a professional project at that point.)

Gelcoat is trickier to apply--to the point that hardly anybody does it. (They have their boats Awlgripped.) But it is "patchable" until it has substantially worn away (as yours apparently has).

A final consideration: IMHO, a painted fiberglass hull (other than provessional Awlgrip) is damaged goods on the resale market. I would probably back away from a painted C-25. But that's me.
