I have a hairline crack in the gelcoat ( I assume it's gelcoat ) of my rudder. It runs down the trailing edge. Apparently these things seem to have problems with delaminating. Any suggestions?
Yes, these rudders have a tendency to split. The usual fix is to open up the crack, determine if there is any rot or delamination, fill it with epoxy, and then finish it off with gelcoat. This is a relatively easy fix depending on the amount, if any, rot or delamination.
Here are some links to topics on the subject of repairing the rudder crack. They have some more detailed instructions for this repair.
John... Just about every C-25 old-style rudder I've seen was cracked on the seam above the waterline--including mine. Mine had other problems, so I bought the new balanced de$ign. If you do repair yours, I'd suggest keeping it indoors during freezing weather--some amount of moisture will probably always be in the core, and no amount of epoxy and glass will stop it from expanding when it freezes.
