Our local San Antonio store closes forever to morrow. According to the worker there, WM is closing all inland stores and concentrating on coastal sites. Our nearest stores are now Austin (if it survives) or Corpus Christi - 90 miles or 200 miles away...I guess Defender will benefit!

They consolidated two stores in CT, and they had several spool ends of halyard and sheet lines which the store Mgr told me they'd sell at 1/2 price. I took them at their word and bought up over 200' of 1/2" line. Saved a bundle! Quite often the stores would rather sell off odds and ends at bargain prices than transport the goods to another store. Definitely worth dickering.
Bruce, I got a Manta Pan set for a steal when the local store closed, they offered me a second at just 15% of the original asking price, but who needs two sets of them?
Love the Pans! Solid base, spare handle, have used all of them on the boat (not all at once )
West marine has never given a rat's xxx about Kansas. I have never considered them a first tier supplier and have only bought an item from them every few years. Defender is my go to with the typical list of others starting with CD. I am also buying more from Amazon now and Ebay is really losing its value now that it is basicly a reseller rather than a garage sale.
I especially like Defender because they're just a few miles down the highway, so the WM I can walk to matches their prices on request. I always stock up at Defender's March warehouse sale. Several other WMs in the area consolidated into one huge store in Old Saybrook--it's quite a place. Hope they don't swallow the Mystic store, too.
The best thing about CD is that they know these boats so well--you can pretty much count on their selections of hardware, cordage, etc., to be as Catalina would have chosen, and some things are better.
Oh... and about a hundred yards from my front door is a big True Value store with a great selection of stainless fasteners. If I need a 2-1/2" x 1/4" bolt, it'll take just a few minutes on foot!
Have used West Marine and Defender online and find Defender to have the better assortment. I do like the free ship-to-store option that West Marine offers but if you do not have a store nearby that is not an option. I do not like Defender's $50 minimum order policy. A lot of my orders are less than $50 so Defender loses out on those.
