I have a few missing cushions on my boat and was wondering if there is a source for original Catalina cloth so I can remake the missing cushions. Any ideas... Thanks Bruce Ebling
Good luck, I'm re-doing my interior and selected a neutral tweed that I think looks good with my color scheme. I don't think the original material is available but you my want to check with Catalina or Catalina Direct. I'm having a local custom interior shop do mine, they look great but it isn't cheap.
When we had new cushions made, I went to a few upholstery shops that had sample books for just about everything--probably even Herculon (which I think that plaid stuff is). We ended up using a car/boat upholstery shop and a linen-like Sunbrella upholstery fabric. We thought it greatly enhanced the interior over the brown (mildewed) plaid--a huge plus for the Admiral.
I looked on Ebay for several months before finding a deal on upholstery fabric that was close to what I wanted. Sold the boat, and fabric with it, before I could start the project. The buyer was able to find a local lady who recovers furniture and got a super price from her. Maybe there's a similar person near you. When we recovered the cushions on our C-22, I used a shop that reupholstered automobile seats, and got it done for a very reasonable amount.
I doubt you will find original material or available cushions unless someone is parting out a 25 or similar aged 27 or 30 (yes, modifications would be needed if cushions are from a 27/30. Check the swap meet for options. Another idea is going to an upholsterer and seeing what they might have in the way of remnant material. You maybe surprised at how much sunbrella and similar materials you can get for a song -- if you are flexible on pattern.
Sunbrella's very robust, stain resistant and water beads up. Defender has a great selection and can produce made-to-order materials. Sailrite is great for raw materials and all the trimmings, like piping to finish seams, zippers and snaps. For a broader scope of materials, there are loads of sources of "vintage 80s upholstery" on the net.
Just a long shot but I would give Catalina a call and see if they can give you the name of the vendor they used to make the cushion covers. Only cost is a phone call.
