It's incredible the amount of space they have that guy in the newspaper. In the States he might have gotten 3 paragraphs. He got quotes from local police, coasties, somebody's grandmother, and picture of his old boat, his new boat, the guy himself and another guy who had formerly held the title Captain Calamity. And the map did it for me. Something tells me that even if that guy got 6 months of boating safety training trouble would still find him. I think a more fitting title might be Captain I Don't Give A 5#!T.
Here's what I posted on SailNet, where someone suggested it might be a hoax. I took some flak for suggesting that the rescuers might be in on the hype:

quote:
The story has also been reported on other UK news sites, though it's possible they're all owned by the same company (not familiar with that).
I doubt it is a total hoax (as in, it never happened), but I wouldn't be surprised if the story was hyped up to pander to the "tabloid crowd." It does have a "Parade Magazine" vibe about it.
It's also possible the kid is doing this intentionally to gain attention for himself. It's purely speculative, but I wonder if his father is on one of the rescue teams, and he and his rescue buddies are going along with it to get some press (and collect some overtime). It would also help explain some of the silly staged "look like a loser" photographs.
