I'm the proud new owner of a 1981 Catalina 25! (I graduated from a San Juan 21 that I sold 2 years ago) I've already learned a bunch here. Thanks for the great resource.
Please give me some advice. I have found some cracks in the hull. The PO stated that the boat would have about a gallon of water in the bilge after he would go for a sail. He said he never saw it but thought the water was "burping" up the keel tube. I'm not so sure. I've had the boat about 2 weeks and have not put the it in the water yet. It's on a trailer next to the lake. Please take a look at the photos below and see what you think. What should I do?
Thank-you,
Jeff
The PO said he liked to keep the shrouds very tight. I had a chance to feel them before we took the mast down and I agree that they felt very tight. I wonder if it could have caused this crack?

to my eye looks like two potential issues you are showing in pictures. The cracks in the dinette front inside by the keel trunk indicate the keel was dropped at least partially. Although it does look less like the cause of the water intrusion. The hull crack appears to extend into the keel trunk as well. whille a keel drop effects the aft portion of the keeel trunk, yours is a hull structural problem. a gallon of water is not normal....definitely inspect and repair.
You have a damaged boat. The only way to proceed is to grind out the crack in the hull to determine the extent of it and repair it; whether it is leaking from there or not. You could take a power washer and try to get water to intrude. It definitely looks like your keel dropped and you may want to look for signs of water damage above the floor. If all that resulted from the drop is a "weeping" situation then you are lucky. Previous Owners who misrepresent boats have a special place in hell. I hope your boat turns out to be a great buy for you or that you can find a good lawyer. Very good Catalina 25s are everywhere for 5k to 12k, a nice '82 that is well maintained should be somewhere in the middle of that range.
San Juans are awesome little racers. A multi National winner from the Catalina 25 Nationals prefers to race his San Juan.
You mentioned that the PO said the keel tube was an issue. You need to check the rubber hose on the keel cable tube below the winch. This could be leaking because the tube is too short, the clamps are not tight or the volcano is leaking too. A gallon of water is an issue that needs attention. The cracks infront of the keel indicate damage from the keel. It can be fixed. There should be no water in the boat after a sail. If your windows are leaking you could also get water in the bilge.
