Seen the "trailer" on the new Robert Redford movie "All Is Lost" A sailing movie. Appears he is aboard his sailboat in dire straits. Opens Oct 25th everywhere I believe.
I prefer things like TransPac documentaries to sailing stories. I have never seen Master and Commander or what ever that was called. Was it Wind that had the Whumper? It was OK. I like hardware.
(Since we are walking a VERY thin line on another thread that is talking about the shutdown... and how it affects sailing... I will refrain from telling you what I think about pompous xxx' actors and musicians whose products I will never support.)

There all about sailors in dire straits, but still I watch them

Your restraint is admirable--or at least your attempted restraint was.
Watching the trailer, I found myself wondering why he was saying on the radio, "This is an SOS call..." I thought the long-accepted standard for that kind of situation was "Mayday, mayday, mayday--this is the vessel..." The question is, will I be distracted by other unseamanlike details? Reviews seem to be pretty good.

It is the "New" Frank, and he certainly seems to have mellowed.
It does have some good reviews, and I enjoy movies. The pompous actors? Along with sports figures, talking heads, just plain rich, and politicians, they're just a component of our self appointed royalty. The actors give me movies, the rest give me practically nothing.
Just saw it, All Is Lost. The real only thing that impressed me was how calm Redford was. To me, it was very unrealistic in so many ways to long to list. Most of which were safety issues.
SPOILER ALERT BELOW IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT
The Admiral and I did disagree with the ending. While I thought he was saved, she thought he was dreaming while dying, sinking to the bottom. Any one else care to chime in. Steve A
To me it's kinda like shark movies.. If you really sail ( or are around sharks ) the movie version always falls short..
The real thing is much more interesting, even if Redford is a great actor. The last thing I want to experience is a recreation of death when I'm doin my best to stay alive...
I like it when holywood recreates a real occurrence..
since the spoiler is out...IMHO - it's not a movie about sailing, for sailors..that's for sure...my take away is the character qualifies as a candidate for a Darwin Award...
Just saw "All is Lost" this weekend. There are a lot of things in the movie that do not make sense, like he never puts a life jacket on! But even with these distractions (and there are quite a few)....I thought it was a good movie. It had beautiful cinematography, a good acting job and had us on the edge of our seat. There are not many "sailing" movies that come out so I'm happy to see one that does. BTW I guess the boat was a 1978 Cal 39. Nice boat!
Does CAPTAIN PHILLIPS take similiar liberties w/ the reality of what really happened as ARGO did?
All I've heard and red, including an interview with Hanks and another with Phillips, says no. It's apparently dead-on. Another interesting point: the pirates are from a Somali community in the Minneapolis area. None were actors before this. Boy were they good!
See it on the big screen if you can. You won't regret it!
Started this topic close to a month ago. Movie still hasn't made it to eastern New York. [off topic] Seen the trailer to what might be another good one. Tom Hanks playing Walt Disney in something to do with the making of "Mary Poppins".
I was at dinner with a non-sailor that saw it ( all is lost ) last week.. All I could think about was if you were not a sailor you probably would not find it remotely interesting. His review was pretty scathing if not funny to hear..
Now if we can only train dolphins to go out and find those overboard containers..
