Next weekend, October 26 and and 27, is the Tucson Sailing Cub regatta in San Carlos, Mexico. Monday morning following the regatta, group cruises depart to the south and north on the Sea of Cortez. Late October begins the cruising season in the southwest. I'm not usually much for club sailing and have done most of my adventures solo, but with my mid-life new family and all, it's time to explore this type of experience to see if it is right for the wife and little one(s). Hope to see someone from the forum down there. I know this post is more properly on another part of the forum, but I'm partial to Catalina 25 owners, having owned two, one being my present sailboat. This will actually be my first race. Never saw the point of it. For me it has only ever been about the journey and the destination and the sunrises and sunsets and the boat people. Competition was for work. But lately I've been drawn to a more purist practice in terms of sailing vs motoring and I'm hoping the racing will help my raw sailing skills, whether or not I win, lose, or leave the race in the middle to go cruising early and on my own.
What a terrific opportunity for you and anyone who can make it there. One of my soap boxes to cruisers is to help them understand that racing equipment is all about depowering the rig. The idea of course is that if the wind builds you can depower and stay out there in the race. Good luck.
I fully agree with your focus on the sunrise, sunset and destination . . . . which explains why on the rare occasion that I do race I come in dead last!!!! . . . . but what a view!
I returned from the trip in time to go trick or treating with my two year old. It was a good sailing and cruising adventure overall. I'm posting more details on my sailblog for those that may be interested.
