Hope you have a swinger with a shoal draft since there's lots of skinny water there, even quite a ways from land. I got a complete set of charts awhile back when I visited Key Biscayne, Bahia Honda and Key West with the family by car. The charts tell the tale - you've got to be mindful and have keen situational awareness at all times. The Everglades are beautiful I hear. I hope y'all have a great time. I'm only a wee bit jealous...
Paul, I'm droolin' over the pictures. Where can I rent a C25 in the keys? I did rent one in Biscayne Bay several years back whilst in Miami, maybe that guy's still around…?
Ice the beer, boil the shrimp, and hit the beach. Snorkel and Swim. I like the night snorkeling ( or night diving ) weather permitting. Get some local information on where and when.
We'll have exclusive use of a Com-Pac 23. We were hoping to do an overnighter but the boat has zero electronics - not even running lights. Maybe sail somewhere during the day - tie-up and then return to home base the next day?
A chart plotter may help us do more exploring and spend less time stuck on sandbars?
We'll read-up on Fort Jefferson.
Redeye is talking the same talk as the owner of the cottages. "Tank tops with holes and flip flops and you'll fit right-in" he explained.

Looks like a very interesting place. Let us know how you like it - it's definitely going on my list of future possbilities.
If you don't have a handheld GPS, this might be a good time to get one. I always take mine along for charters and rentals, along with a bicycle handlebar mount that I cut off at the end of the week. On the ComPac I'd probably strap the handlebar mount to the tiller handle so it's always available to look down at.
Really, with a week and a boat at your disposal, you might be better off skipping the early morning till evening trip to the Dry Tortugas. The keys are about being laid back. They have changed a lot in 40 years, but going with the flow is still the best way to experience the area.
