I know that sometime ago there was a posting about attaching the furler to the aft hole on the front of the masthead and not the top/front hole. I have a picture of that correction but no discussion. Anyone remember the discussion or have any insight. My furler is attached to the forward higher point on the masthead.

I recall the discussion. I'm not sure but, I seem to remember the reason was to allow for a spinnaker/drifter/gennaker halyard to be attached forward of the furler.

John is correct. If attaching a block forward of the furler is not an issue either hole is fine. So if you are installing a new CDI furler, and your forestay is attached to the forward hole, you do not have to move the forestay back to the inner hole.

Before concluding that "either hole is fine" you might want to consider the potential effect of each location on your mast rake. My forestay turnbuckle is cranked down as far as it can go without interfering with the furler drum's rotation. If I were to move to a hole that was closer to the stem fitting, my mast rake would be increased above Catalina's specification, with no room left to crank down the turnbuckle. I know from past experience that too much rake causes too much weather helm, which is why my turnbuckle is cranked down as far as it can go.

When I drop my mast for the winter, I'm going to check the location of the two pin locations. If the unused one is further from the stem fitting, I might consider moving my attachment point there, since it will allow me to let the turnbuckle out a little more without having to shorten my forestay. It's hard to tell from the pic which pin is further away - one is further aft, but lower:
