This week I received a notice of the Near Coastal Safety at Sea seminar provided by the Mystic Seaport Organization. The email states that topics include: lessons learned to prevent disaster, damage control, crew overboard and rescue procedures (including pfds, flares, distress calls), medical care and prevention, handling heavy weather, life raft, and other demonstrations. The course is being offered on Feb 8 at the seaport. I'm not endorsing the course or representing it in any way, but it seems quite interesting. Bruce Ross Passage ~ SR-FK ~ C25 #5032 Port Captain — Milford, CT
The series of Safety at Sea seminars are produced by US Sailing, and are moderated by some of the most knowledgeable sailors in the US. The one I attended was moderated by John Rousmaniere, author of The Annapolis Book of Seamanship, and he talked with us and answered questions all day. It was a good opportunity to get information from people who really know their stuff. It should be well worthwhile.
Thanks for posting... I haven't decided on attending--might be out of town, but it will probably include a lot of smart seamen with lots of stories. Generally it's the people that make these things most valuable. Bruce, I wonder whether any are planned in places like Stamford or Larchmont. Edit: Never mind--apparently not.

I would like to attend - but I see the price is $100 for members and $125 for non-members. I'd like to get the member rpice, but couldn't exactly determine what the membership was to: the Mystic Seaport? or the sponsoring training organization? Suggestions?
They had about 150 attendees--way more than I expected or hoped for. Presentations ranged from fair to good, on disaster management, damage control, pumps, steering systems, overboard, medical (incl. seasickness), weather, and abandoning ship. A brief "panel" discussion with audience questions at the end was best. (No questions taken till then.) They pulled the cord on a $5,000 6-man life raft and let it blow up in the middle of the room--pretty impre$$ive--and let people climb in. There were some vendors of toys like PLBs, EPIRBs, etc... I'm starting to think seriously about a PLB.
US Sailing have various forums/seminars and while most are focused on racing their offshore racing is mostly about safety. My son has attended several times (Larchmont and Stamford) and especially liked the safety aspect. Landfall in Stamford also has safety seminars, either at their facility in Stamford or at local Yacht Clubs such as American, Larchmont, etc. Storm Trysail Foundation co-sponsors some safety at sea seminars with US Sailing or other programs --and is making a big push to teach kids (HS through college program) and "novice" about safety. All good stuff!
