was taking advantage of the warm weather to clean up arwen. saw she has a former name that you can see if you stand in the right position. the last part of the name is SSYJ was thinking "sassy j" maybe?
Our boat has two "ghost" names that you can see if you stand with the light right. I've only seen them while it's on the trailer, never in the water. Maybe it's because the viewing angle changes so drastically.
I've never changed the name of a boat of which I knew the name. Luckily I've liked all the names. Haven't yet changed the name of the current boat. I hope all the former owners did the ceremony correctly :)
Our boat appeared to have one name for 25+ years, another name for a year or two. The original name (Lewellyn) was always viewable because the almond colored gelcoat faded differently there than elsewhere. The second name (The Great Surprise) came right off and left no ghosting. We renamed the boat Lutra 2 years ago when she was 28, this year she turns 30.
I tried quite a bit to get rid of the faded Lewellyn, but never had any luck at it. You can really see it in this photo, which is from just after purchasing the boat:
A couple hours of buffing and light sanding got it to not be noticeable from feet away, but you could always see it.

I, too, have not changed the name of my boats, and like you, the names were neither objectionable nor highly personalized. My first boat, High Hopes, perfectly summed up my thoughts when I got into sailing so I kept the name. My current boat, North Star, also had an agreeable name, and she is indeed my guiding light. As they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
My boat has a red gel coat and is now called Red Robin - the PO renamed it with ceremony as his wife's name is Robyn. The original name was Therapy and the ghost of the name can just be seen in certain light although it's now behind an auxiliary outboard bracket. Sailorbaz
My 'new to me' boat came without a name. But after buffing and waxing the hull I can just make out the outline of a former name 'Mariana' I like the name and think I will keep it! Can I just ignore the fact that it wasn't named Mariana for atleast a couple of years?
Moe had two different names we could see ghosted in the gelcoat: Pegasus and Cornelia Marie...when we applied the vinyl we also found a logo of pegasus, worn gelcoat provided a dimensional feel.
Yrah I think mariana would not be a rename. think you are safe. The current boat that I'm getting ready is named ACT1. This will be the first boat I have ever renamed. Going with EOWYN to keep the lord of the rings theme. plus I like girls names on boats. Not superstitious, but I'll do the rename ceremony, it'll be fun.
list of boat names first boat (unnamed glouster 21) DASBOOTY (dinghy) Sol Bianca (Atkins schooner) TEVAKE (Cheoy Lee Luders 36) ARWEN (Catalina 25 TR/SK) EOWYN (Catalina 25 TR/WK)
My boat was named LaFawnduh when I bought her and it was not displayed in small lettering either!
I didn't like the name the first time I saw it. It wasn't long before I got tired of people pointing at the boat and laughing as I went in and out of the Kemah Channel past the Kemah Boardwalk so it wasn't long before I removed it.
The PO said he named her LaFawnduh after LaFawnduh Lucas-Dynamite from the movie Napolean Dynamite.
Despite WHAT I DID the ghost of my boats former name would appear in certain light/conditions . . . until last year when, pressed for time I conceded to having the yard polish the topside so I could get in without loosing another weekend. Voila, using electric buffers and their knowing what you are doing scared the ghost away . . . for at least now!
