A friend of mine lives in Atlantic Highlands NJ not from the Sandy Hook National Seashore just south of New York harbor. My sailing grounds are Long Island Sound just west of New Haven. He has invited me to sail down to NJ and hang out in a very beautiful piece of water, but getting there is somewhat problematic. 1st, it's far. Probably 2 full days on the water and at the tiller both ways. Then there's the little matter of passing through Hells Gate with a slack or favorable current. Then it's NY harbor - one of the busiest harbors in the world. And I don't have AIS. Lastly, lower NY harbor is also known as the Atlantic Ocean! While it would be a trip to remember, there're plenty of dangers. At the same time, I'm invited to the US Power Squadrons' 100th anniversary where it all happened a century ago: the NY and Boston Yacht Clubs established the 1st Squadron in New Haven. They've agreed to put us up in the mooring fields in the harbor and feed and water us. That's about an 8-mile trip each way. Both take place on the same weekend. Quandaries - quandaries!

Wow, what a fun decision to make. I have only sailed on the Mississippi and a few lakes around Missouri. The biggest dangers are the occasional barge, and of course the power boaters. Because it is winter and things are slow around here, I have been dreaming about the summer and planning a long trip up river on the Sailstice. I can go about 30 miles up river before I get to the next lock. I might try locking through, but I am a bit nervous, as I have never done it yet. During the summer the river is more like a lake with very little current. Whatever you decide to do, be safe and have fun. That's what it's all about!
