Went out on Thursday with my son and daughter - the weather forecast was 74ยบ, winds SE @ 12, moderate chop. Whoa! A scrap of jib, a furler cut 150 unrolled just to the mast and no main. The seas were 2-3 and stacking to 4-5 at regular intervals. Exhilarating day! We never dropped below 4.7 kt and averaged a hair over 5 for 2.5 hours. That day was worth the drive down here.

Nice! I've had a few great days sailing on just my 110 jib. In 10kts of wind I can get to hull speed and still be fairly flat on lines. Much over that and the boat gets hard to control and it's time to put up the main with a reef or two in it and depending on whether Rita's on board or not, hank on the 70 storm jib (or if she is aboard maybe drop sails & motor in...).
We stayed in the bay. We only had part of the day and had planned to sail over to Eagle Harbor, but I chose not to try the narrow channel in the conditions. We just sailed a roughly triangular course of a little over 12.5 miles out to near the point of the peninsula and back. Incidentally, i also shifted the white balance and fine tuned my daughter's photo this morning to reload it later.
Edit: We're staying about 2 miles east of the shoals and saw one poor west bound soul who probably didn't do his homework spend a very rocky night on the hook there. I had thought about doing that on a ICW and coastal cruise to Apalach and back, but decided on an ICW only trip after checking things out. I can't seem to get a weather window this time of year for a 12 - 16 hour coastal shot back to PSJ.
Went to go out yesterday but had outboard issues, gunk in the carb....spent yesterday smelling like gas instead of sailing. Dave, it looks like you had a a great sail. Love the panhandle.
