I have a 84 SR FK. I want to add a track to the mast for my whisker pole. I want to pole out my 135. How far up the mast base should I put the track. The mast is down now we had over 60 inches of snow this year. It will be awhile before we can start working here in Ohio.
I never felt the need for a track, I just installed a stainless 2" diameter ring with rivets. I would wait until the mast is up, then deploy your 135% with the sail end of the pole attached and mark the mast where the pole will be horizontal.
I agree with Derek. The only reason why you might need an adjustable padeye on a track is if you think you might want to fly a spinnaker in the future. If that's in your thinking, then a 4' track and adjustable padeye isn't very expensive, or difficult to install, and would be good to do now.
I installed a track. But the reason, was to be able to store the whisker pole vertically on the mast. I have a chock at the base of the mast and the car/ring slides up to keep it there.
The track was mounted so that the pole could slide up as far as needed to clear the base of the mast. Even at that height the track extends down farther than needed. I think the track is 5' long, but I can measure it later. BTW, I installed it with the mast up so I could be sure of the exact postion.
