Looking to buy a Cat 25 Wing or Swing keel in good condition. Prefer a Porti potty, roller furler, gel coat in excellent condition. Prefer 1989 or later but condition is more important than age and configuration.
Have you checked Strictly Sails in Cincinnati? Nice folks! They have about 3 C25s listed on their website. Also, they are having a sale this Saturday, and they usually offer price reductions for their sales (as well as free donuts!). Their link is at http://www.strictlysailinc.com/product-category/sailboats/
Also, the last I heard, there is a sailboat dealer in Indianapolis called Sailboats, Inc. I just checked their website, and they have 2 C25s listed, one of which is a 1989 wing keel. Their link is at http://www.sailboatsindiana.com/boats_for_sale.htm
Local weather looks good for a pleasant drive on Saturday. Sunny and 49 deg!
Thanks to all for the great advice. I wish id read this yesterday. I would have taken theride to Cincinnati. While I would prefer a wing keel, I think the swing must work well also. I realize its one more thing to maintain. Any words of advice on that topic? Anyway - Thanks for a great site. Regards, Chris
Castrilper: I chose a fin keel to get away from maintenance, clunk and whining of the cable. Others don't mind the maintenance every 2 years, or cranking the keel. If you are set on a wing, be patient. In the end getting JSUT what you want will be more gratifying.
The swing keel points a little higher than the wing, but the wing is still a good sailing boat. I think you're on target in your ranking of the wing and swing keel boats. If you intend to sail it on an inland lake around the Dayton/Cincinnati area, either the wing or the swinger would be suitable. If you intend to sail it in coastal or Great Lakes waters, where the waves might get bigger and choppier, then the wing would be more robust.
I looked at the photos of the 1989 wing in Indianapolis, and it looks like a very nice, turnkey boat.
Thanks again for all the help. I tried posting from my phone but- apparently that didn't work. At any rate, I just wanted to post that I did end up purchasing a boat- but, alas - not a catalina 25. I got an O'Day 26. It is basically the same set up inside as the Cat 25 only ever so slightly larger owing to the additional foot in length. Up on deck a little different as well. 30' mast full rig. Fully battened loose foot main and a furling genoa. Boat has an 1800# shoal keel with a 4' lightweight centerboard - much like the starwind 19 I currently have (and am selling) . Gelcoat is in phenominal condition freshwater boat etc... while I really wanted a Cat 25- I believe this boat is fantastic as well and will be a great addition to my family! :-)
An O'Day? Seriously after all the help we've given you? Just kidding, I wish you well with your new boat. Ironically, one of the boats I considered before I bought my C25-SK was an O'Day 26. My big reason was the draft, I think the O'Day is about 36" and the SK is around 30" which makes a big difference on a freshwater lake in the Northeast. Please keep in touch.
Thanks for the well wishes Brian and Joann. I wasn't aware of the difference in draft but, where I take the boat there is plenty of water beneath the keel. I have a good friend with a Catalina Capri fin keel that does ok with it.Lake Erie is more concern for him than the "manmade" we typically sail on. Where in CT do you put your boat? I rode submarines out of Groton for a number of years. LI sound and the Thames was a sailing playground. Anyway- getting off topic here. Any other major differences between the C-25 and the O- 26 you could share?
I don't know too many details about the O'Day 26 because I gave up on it after discovering the limited launch depth on this lake. I'm on Candlewood Lake which is on the West side of the state near the NY border. It was built in the 30's as a storage lake for hydroelectric power. Since then it has become a recreational lake with mostly powerboats and PWC's. There are still a few sailboats but not like it was when I was a kid. Now I only sail during the week and use the boat as a floating camper on the weekends. Here are some links to O'Day Owners Groups: http://www.iheartodays.com/downloads.html and http://forums.oday.sailboatowners.com/private.php
