I am having a slight problem with the cockpit coaming lockers - I wonder if anyone else is experiencing the same. I have noticed that when the comparment lids are in the closed position and I have to stand on them, there seems to be just enough "give" in the lid material that it makes a horrible "pop" sound - the same sound as if it is cracking (It can't be good for it). Also noticing that the compartments are not sealed with any kind of weather stripping, I decided to tackle the problem by applying some of the rolled weather stripping with the adhesive backing. It solved the popping problem. However, after a while the material seems to get soft and rolled our of position of the lid edge. Has anyone had this problem? If so, what do you recommend as a solution?
Have experienced the same popping, but not often. I have done the same to weather seal approach and applied a thick weather strip with a sticky back to the underside of the lids... mine seems to have stayed in place.

I have had the popping noise as well. After 1 or 2 times of stepping on the lids I thought it would be best to keep my 240lbs off of them. It does not seem as bad if you have the cockpit cushions it must soften the step.
At the 2003 Denver boat show; looking at the 2003 c250 they have added a 3rd hinge. I might look into adding one if it becomes more of a problem.
With the cockpit cushions always on when we are on the boat, right now it is not a problem.
I have that same problem with the port locker only. I have looked and looked to see what the cause is, and if it seems to be doing any dammage. Thus far no visible dammage, and I really am not sure where the rub is that causes it. There is usually a very painful/scared look on everybody's face that steps on the locker for tne first time and it pops. I thought my boat was unique, perhaps we should name this phenomena. How many boats/occurrences do we need for a name?

You've got that right Ray! I took a look at Bren Peterson's boat, Ruah ('nice boat!) ... when I stepped into the cockpit and heard the POP, I thought my big ass had just put a hole in his boat ... I was mortified! Thank goodness it's just a quirk of the C-250.
My old C-25 makes some creaks and groans, but I know what y'all mean about that popping noise ... it sure does get your attention.
Sorry, I should have warned you about the "cracking locker sound." I didn't worry about it; have gotten used to it even though it IS annoying. Even my daughter has it happend to her occasionally at 85 pounds.
My theory is this: It only happens when I have the locker packed with gear(lines, fenders, etc.). I've noticed that only when I have too much stuff in the locker and the lid does not sit on the flange and it's own (i.e. I have to hold the lid down to get the latch secured), it seems to do it. If I've taken the fenders out and the lid sits flat on the flange, it doesn't. I think that when the locker is too full and the lid is held closed against the tension of the latch, the strap part of the latch rides up a bit onto the "rotating" part of latch lock. When I step on the locker it forces the strap part of the latch back over the gap between the rotating part on the side of the locker, thus the popping noise.
Don't know if that makes any sense without pictures/diagrams. Another reason I've come up with this "theory" is that it only happens on the port locker, never the starboard one, which never has enough stuff in it to keep the lid from seating on the flange on it's own.

Bren wrote exactly what I was thinking, you guys may have two much stuff packed in locker....take some stuff out and let the lid seat and see if it continues to pop...I have never heard this on my 99' 250 Steve

The first time I heard the pop I was sure that it had to be expensive. I think the "problem" is caused by s slip of the vertical edge of the cover against the horizontal portion of the locker. Scary, but analagous to snapping your fingers. Mine makes noise when empty also. I had the same problem on another boat and I never could detect any real damage.

quote:
Mine pops even when empty.

Mine too. the first time I heard it was in the dealers yard.
Due to the amount of people who have this anomaly, I think it now warrants an official designation along the lines of "Catalina Smile", "Keel Cable Hum", "Curtain Burner", "Keel Clunk",...etc.
How about "Port Locker Pop", "Locker Popper", or "Storage Snap". Or maybe, "Compartment Crackle", "Coaming Click", "Compartment Click", " or the "C250 Welcome Aboard Salute"!

quote:
Don - I like "locker popper" - short, sweet & descriptive! Derek

I like it too Don. However you didn't come up with any which address the fear that somebody has (ie. Heart attack lid) when they think they just broke something big on new or almost new boat.
