I just purchased Gary Clarke's 155% Ullman drifter. I have never owned one or used one on a c250. I have a couple of questions maybe you can help me with.
What is the max wind you should use the drifter in?
Can you use a whisker pole with the drifter? If so what length do I need?
I have the winches over the coaming compartments so all I should have to add is stanchions blocks on the stern pulpit.
I have seen picture of a foot luff control run to the cockpit to adjust the luff. Can the luff be controlled with a small line connecting the foot to the forestay chain plate then use the halyard to adjust tension?
Any ideas or help with this is greatly appreciated.
Bryan, very good on the aquisition. The sail is good up to about 8 knots. It will overpower the 250 about the time that its wind limit is reached.
You have it right on the sheeting. I used 1/4" sheets and the small blocks that Ullman supplied. They are mounted on the Harken stanchion mounts that was depicted recently.
You also are right about using a block at the stem and running a tack line thru it and back to cockpit and as you have the extra winches use one of them.
Ullman gets a full cut out of the sail so hoist it until the jib halyard shackle jams and it will leave a short tack line distance when hardened for weathering. Off wind let her out and fill up...sometimes 30 inches or so.
The sail is too light for a pole and its not needed. It will fill and hold shape in very light wind.
I like to hoist and douse in the lee of the main while on a broad reach...and use some method of securing the sail bag. I have a couple of eyes on the bag and added two twist locks on the port boom forward.
