Some months ago I posted a how-to for raising engines using a spinnaker pole and boom vang purchase. I couldn't get the photos to work. Thanks to Don Lucier's instructions I may have gotten it this time. Here goes...
If I did this right you should see the main and jib halyards attached to the top of the crane. There is a side stay on each side of the top to control the side-to-side movement. The boom vang does the lifting. The base can swivel on the towel jammed in the cockpit sole. The boom vang is clipped onto the head and the lifting ring of the engine. For insurance, there is also a line reeved through the top block of the vang to the head and another on the bottom of the vang to the lifting ring of the engine.
I can easily lift my Evinrude 9.9 4S alone. Using the side stays I can move the top of the spinnaker pole to the dock and lower the engine to its cart.

I like it! I have never had to remove/reinstall the outboard from any of my 3 sailboats while they were in the water, but the time will come sooner or later, and your idea seems like a winner. The boom would also work, and would probably be preferable to a twist-lock whisker pole (which is the only spar other than the boom that I have on the boat).
