On my list of things to do to get the boat ready for the water, is that I wanted to fix the rails in a couple of places where there is some cracking and it looks like some water is getting through.
I want to remove the screws, cleanup underneath, and then seal around the whole thing. What type of "goop" should I use to seal around the base of the rail?
By all means use the butyl rubber tape. I tried the 3M stuff and it leaked the next year. I purchased the butyl rubber from 'mainsail' on Sailnet.com. It is great stuff and much easier to work with. The only thing I have found to make my windows not leak. I will be sealing more things this spring (stanchions, etc.)
Polysulfide is my choice. More time up front, but it will be good for decades, 20 - 30 years. Butyl tape will eventually squish and leak, but on the plus side, it is easy to replace.
