I am a long time sailor, sold my 30' and purchased a very nice C25. I am about to launch the boat for the first time (bought it late last fall)and I am wondering why the main side stay "chain plates" have two possible locations for attaching the stays, and which should be used. I have a tall rig and it occurred to me that Catalina probably use the same plates for both the tall and standard rigs and the standard rig uses the inner hole and the tall rig the outer, but ... I would like some confirmation from someone who actually knows.

I have a standard rig and the uppers are attached to the outer hole.

For what it's worth the Catalina 25 Parts Catalog pdf I have shows the inboard location on several pages. See the Manuals and Brochures tab on the right.

Fred, is there still ice on the Lake? (We are former Upers transplanted to SC years ago.) Saw pictures recently of people swimming with the small ice bergs in Marquette. That is cold water.

From Frank Hoppers extensive photo collection shows the uppers on his 89 attached to the outer holes. This is a good question.

On my 1984 the holes are different sizes for different pins. I found this out when I had new stays made the new pin would only fit in one of the holes.

When we had our '84 tall rig, I read that the outer holes on the chainplates were for the tall rig and the inner holes were for the standard rig. Mine was rigged to the outer holes when we bought her.

I think the outer holes make sense for the tall rig. I tried to identify a wear pattern to see if that would tell me which holes to use and while both holes look like they may have had something in them, the outer holes have more wear evidence on the outer service. So - I am going with the outer holes.

I looked into this and the 2 holes have nothing to do with a standard or tall rig so I walked around my Marina and every C25 had the uppers in the outer holes. Oh yes, Why the 2 holes you ask. This is from CD.

Anything larger your jib sheets are past the uppers so unless you plan on using a small jib and think that 1 inch will make a difference then the outer holes are fine. Another myth put to rest.
