My wife is an avid birder and we have been through several binoculars. Now we use Nikon 10 X 50. One of her discarded pair are on the boat, but I don't remember what they are.
FYI, Active Captain & Defender have a special going on this week for a pair of Fujinon Mariner WP-XL Binoculars for $122 which seems like a pretty good price. The deal is limited to stock on hand, so don't dawdle if you want a pair.
The special's only good until Jan 6th 2015 I believe.
This may be off the main discussion but I've used my Fujinon 8x23 Airdrop binocs for years, and while they're not as powerful as the bigger glasses, they have several redeeming characteristics for me: 1. Waterproof - I get rained on and splashed on all the time. Being waterproof, I can rinse off any seawater that sprays on them 2. Drop-proof - while anything with glass in it will break if mistreated, these are rubberized and padded where it counts. On the ends, on the top and underneath. For me (a klutz), that's an essential 3. Big enough - I find that when onboard, I can't spend a whole lot of time looking through field glasses, otherwise the motion drives me nuts and makes me sick (I'm not usually prone to seasickness). If the image were much larger, I'd probably be unable to stabilize on it in a moving boat. 4. It weighs 16.7 oz Here's a similar version to what I have: Binocs Mine are all black without the yellow trim.
I have Nikon (OceanPro)/Steiner(Navigator) and Fujinon and the "go to" are the Fujinon Mariner 8x50 -- they are light, easy to use and great optics. Also very inexpensive when purchased at a Defender sale. I also have a Bushnell Stabilized set that work great especially in rough conditions but are not as user friendly. Note: why so many binoculars? College aged sailing son who while talented for some reason leaves them on other's boats -- until the end of the race season!
