I was out sailing a week ago. The weather turned colder after that weekend and then we were away for the New year's week. But this past Sunday the temps went up to 60F, though, it was drizzling in the morning and threatening rain the rest of the day. I decided to clean my cockpit non-skid surfaces and then since the weather was okay, just relaxed on the boat for a couple of hours. Now it's around 40F and taking a nose dive for the next few days. So...no sailing for now but hopes for another good weekend which anything greater than 40F and sunny is fair game for a sail.
Funny thing - we were promised an El Niño winter here in the North East, meaning moderate temps, wetter than average, with zonal flow and occasional warm fronts with southerlies coming up the Atlantic seaboard. Previous El Niño winters have been uneventful for the most part. What we seem to be getting however is an El Niño backdrop with a Polar Vortex overlay! Otherwise known as a roller coaster: warm wet stretches in the 50s&60s and cold windy outbreaks in the noughts & teens!!! All we need now is a Polar Vortex ++ a huge storm - we'll get clobbered by the Blizzard of '15! Maybe spring will come early.
To me, the scariest weather forecast is for "freezing spray". EVERYTHING gets coated with a heavy glaze of ice - you can't drive, you can't walk and forget trying to sail!
Dave - have you ever paddled with Conn Yak? If this photo was taken at Connectoicut's Rocky Neck State Park, my guess is this gent is a member of Conn Yak. Total extreme sea-kayakers. As the old Saturday Night Live spot asked "Quien es mas macho?" this guy

The snowman on the beach was taken at Rocky Neck, Google it. I just threw in the frozen kayaker to emphasize the polar conditions that Ray was showing. Don't know where that was taken. Personally I think the frozen face guys nuts!
But don't laugh... All winter long we hear about frostbiter sailing regattas. The weather doesn't stop folks from enjoying watersports - provided you're dressed and prepped for it. The frstbiting I'd like to be doing takes place this and next week in and around Key West!

...like the guy in NJ this past week who went duck hunting in his canoe, on the evening of the big blow (gale warnings, 30-40 kts, temp plummeting to zero) and ended up not being able to paddle back against the wind and through the ice. Luckily, he had a cell phone, called home, and they called 911. I think the USCG picked him up. Nearly a Darwin Award candidate.

So correct me if I am wrong, but people pay good money to risk life and limb out in a mashup of ice-floes on the St Lawrence in a stinkin' plastic canoe that will buckle like tin foil if caught between two chunks of ice? No wonder they find "floaters" every spring up in the Great White North! Dumbasses!
It's 57 and sunny today, but I'm here at home doing sailing club dues renewal bookkeeping and helping the boss clean up for entertaining our Sunday School class next week. Oh well. I've also got some continuing ed to do next week to help get ready for tax season.
Sailing? Now? Made me think "I wish . . . . ." but, regrettably when I last checked Limerick was shrink wrapped, on the hard and it was 15 degrees! Guess I gotta wait a while!
