Peggy got a 90% and gave me a great smile when she was handling the Jib Sheets during the many Figure of 8's and the COB drills.

So now is it safer for her to fall overboard, or for you to?

We'll find out during our next trip!

The plan is to practice the same things we learnt on the course.

We have already ordered the next course book.

Paul -

When do you think you'll take ASA 103? I'm thinking about doing 103 & 104 in November. Will your wife be continuing? Mine is happy with 101 for now, she does not have as much of an itch as I do.

The book for 103 arrived today.

We figure it'll cost around $2,000 plus meals for the course and hotel. So we're budgeting for it.

1st thought is November, but I would like to be ahead of that date. Peggy is totally on board with doing the course and has been looking at alternative (ie. not down town) hotels. 103 is a day sail course.

There's a good chance that the school will shut down for peak hurricane season, probably a good idea. So it's either November or before Mid July. The H seems to be arriving earlier each year.

Just a few notes...

The course has already had a positive impact upon our sailing thoughts. We have discussed COB procedures because the course made the process so clear. I have also run mentally through the process while thinking about the boat being in different conditions (Close hauled, running, rough seas etc.) and that thought process is much easier to do after focusing on the process during the course.

Our instructor, Cap'n Brad', made the COB process seem easy. I have been pushing Peggy to practice the maneuver for several years (stubborn) but by participating in the course, Peggy got it! I was so proud seeing her throw the boat around and then up into wind with the float just off the side of the boat as we stopped in irons.

FYI, Peggy has been nursing a very sore shoulder the past 5 months, and I was worried that she would excuse herself from doing the course, but she wanted to get an A! In my mind she got it!

I purchased the 103 book from West Marine, it's the same price as from the ASA and half the price of Amazon. (even with Amazon prime)

My wife and I just finished the 103 course, it was awesome. My wife loves sailing and while she found the 101 course somewhat valuable, she wasn't super thrilled with it. The 103 course was totally different, she loved it and is already talking about doing the 104 course and spending more time sailing on her own... I think the courses are very valuable, not just for our sailing skills, but our relationship while on the boat as well. I really like having someone else barking orders and telling her (and me) 'you're doing it wrong'.... we did both our courses in Santa Barbara, CA and FYI they gave us a 36 foot boat to stay on during our course since we were from out of town, so it actually wasn't too expensive.

Gongratulations Paul and Peggy. I am glad that you enjoyed the process.

I woulld like to second sdpinaz's comment. I did the same thing with the same folks at Santa Barbara (101, 103 & 104). Probably stayed on the same 36 foot Catalina with my family. I am a lake sailor and a complete coastal newbie.

If you want to do 104, the channel islands are 20+ miles offshore with a shipping lanes to cross. Great practice.

The instruction and instructors for 101 & 103 were absolutely wonderful. The only fly in the ointment was that while our 104 instructor was knowledgeable and professional, we had some personality friction (or maybe a better description is a teaching style/learning style disconnect). It was nothing unmanageable over a two-day stint.

Great trip and well worth the time and dollars.

Regards
