The dockmaster still jokes about the day he saw my outboard backfire, then catch fire (he was watching from his back deck on his house - nothing he could do)... He saw me scramble to the foredeck, ready to jump off... when it didn't immediately explode I scurried down below for the extinguisher, put it out quickly... assessed the damage, then fired the darned thing back up and motored back none the worse for wear.
The motor was a 2.2hp with integral tank. The cap had the tiniest leak in it. I'd tilt the motor out of the water when not in use. Well that provided JUST enough fuel to catch fire with a backfire! I mean, like barely damp with fuel... UGH.
had nice rolling flames out from underneath too, thought for sure it got the carb.. but no, just the cowling...
The club took some boy-scouts out for intro to sailing... one of the scoutmasters asked "why would you need a fire extinguisher on a sailboat." I pointed to the motor, and said "those things use gasoline, they have this inane ability to burn EVEN in the presence of water. And before you ask, yes I've learned this first hand."
From now on, my motors don't backfire more than once before they are rebuilt or replaced.

Then there's the 12V wiring... I learned about that first-hand 10 miles from port on Jim Baumgart's C-25. You don't need 110V to start a fire--just enough amperage and some insulation that's chafed away in a screwed-down wire tie. Smoke was billowing out of the dumpster and the galley!
