Over on the Capri 22 forum there is a guy looking to buy new. His dealer (I think its a weak authorized Catalina Dealer) is having a problem setting up an order for a new boat (Capri 22) for him.

Feel free to PM me, and I'll do same over there. I thought about Gerry, but he's more technical. I don't have info yet on where he's located to hook him up with a bigger dealer (keeping the original in the loop of course).

Rcmd your friend contact Catalina Yachts directly via their website (customer sales). When I wanted to order a replacement cabin port/window, I contacted their technical services dept and they took care of me. The mfr is the best source to find out the authorized dealers that are closest to him, other than the one he has worked with unsuccessfully.

Thanks guys... I think if we find them crazy enough to buy new... we need to turn over every rock to help them. :) I almost bought new a few times. So I get it.

Wow - I guess for a 22 you might want to buy new, but you get so much more when you buy a few years "gently used" and improved! You get stuff like stoves, lights, anchors, lines, fenders, cushions, safety gear, lines to name a few. I totally lucked out with Passage but that's another story.
I did buy a 13' Laser Performance boat at one point for my daughter brand spankin' new. Cost plenty, but it is a beauty. There are not many expensive upgrades you need to make on a dinghy, but once you get into a coastal cruiser like a C22 or C25, you can save a bundle on a pre-owned boat.

Racers might not be looking for some of those things--maybe a decent sail inventory, pole(s), etc... But I'm glad you felt lucky, Bruce!

If you intend to keep a boat for a long time, buying new makes sense. I bought a new C25 and sailed it for 23 years, and the amortized cost was about $500 a year. During the time I owned it, I never had to make any major repairs. If you don't intend to keep it so long, then a used boat would probably be a better deal.

About the same time that I bought my C25, I priced a beautiful new Tayana 37, and I just checked yachtworld, and found that if I had bought it, it would probably be worth more today than what I paid for it. (Darn! I knew I should have bought that boat!)

I recently sailed on one... It's the predecessor to the Valiant 40, arguably the most successful passagemaker and circumnavigator in history. Beautiful in its classic way (canoe stern and all), but that's what it is--a bit of a tub in a bay or coastal environment. Comparing that to a C-25 is........ ummmmm...... like..... Never mind. (...maybe like comparing a C-25 to a Flying Scott. )
