Yesterday I went for a sail with my dog (A Border Collie named Molly). She has not been on the boat often and is not comfortable there. I had her life jacket on and a tether. When I went up on deck to loose the main she followed me so I had to shorten the tether to keep her in the cockpit. She spent her time on my lap for the most part. Thankfully the auto tiller worked well. Tacking was an issue and I ended up in irons when using the auto tiller to tack.
When we arrived at the marina the parking lot to the dock area was closed due to flooding. The parking lot to the restaurant was about 6 to 8 inches deep and they used a golf cart to shuttle people to the restaurant and marina office. After a somewhat short sail and on the way into my slip the tach quit and the amp meter centered as well as the engine temp starting to climb. Luckily I was in the slip before the temp got to high. Upon inspection found the belt that drives the water pump and alternator trashed. During the putting up of the boat a friend called and was going to meet me at the restaurant. I told them that the water was up but they were shuttling people to the restaurant. we agreed to meet. When walking back toward the main dock I stopped to visit with some friends and they informed me that the parking lot continued to flood and they closed the restaurant. I reached for my phone to call an let the friend know that the restaurant was closed and found my phone was not in the pocket where I put it. OOPS! I headed back to my boat to see if it was on the boat-no luck, but, when I was looking for the phone, I heard a splash and look around to find Molly in the lake by the bow. She was swimming toward the finger. I went to get her and pulled her out of the water. I had her tied to the bow pulpit on a leash and have no idea how she managed to take the plunge. Upon returning to the parking lot I found that the water was really deep. I picked up Molly and headed to the truck. The water reached up to the bottom of my shorts. When I parked in the far lot my truck was high and dry. Upon returning the water was about 4 inches deep on the front wheels. Thankfully, the truck is four wheel drive and I was able to go through a ditch up an embankment to a road that was not flooded. I learned this morning that shortly after I left the marina was closed to all with the police guarding it. Was not my best day and I am not sure when I will be able to get back to the boat to install a new belt. Guess I better head to the phone store now.
